The incorporation of central sustainability criteria is of core significance especially in areas where complex challenges require cross-sectoral decisions and thus the silo mentality to be overcome. In this context, the Parliamentary Advisory Council views itself as a guardian of sustainability policy and initiates discourse across disciplines. It regularly informs the German Bundestag about its activities and submits an annual report to Parliament with recommendations for sustainable means of shaping the future. The German Bundestag, for its part, holds an annual debate focusing on the topic of sustainable development and future-related matters. The Advisory Council consults with other institutions promoting sustainable development and maintains contact with the future-focused committees of other national parliaments and EU sustainability bodies.
