Since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Petitions Committee has been the bridge between the Bundestag and its sovereign, the people. It gives the public a way to contact the German Parliament with requests, complaints and suggestions – both regarding their own concerns and in the broader public interest. This makes it a seismograph that records the current mood among the population. Its 26 members carefully examine all the requests and complaints received by the committee which fall within the remit of the Federation. Due to the federal principle upon which Germany is structured, some matters are the responsibility of the federal states, or Länder. The joint federal and Länder petitions portal provides an overview of all Petitions Committees and their respective contact information: https://petitionsportal.de
